Tata Sons have been asked to clear a Rs. 1,524 crore Goods and Services Tax bill, CNBC TV18 reported, citing an unidentified government official. The alleged dues pertain to a $1.2 billion settlement with NTT Docomo in 2018, following a three-year dispute over the Japanese company’s exit from Tata Teleservices. The taxman is invoking sections of the law that point to an 18% levy in cases where two parties agree to an act in exchange for money. But tax experts say the provision may not hold water since Tata’s payment was awarded by the court.
