How Can Plants and Animals Affect Our Drinking Water?

As it is, water on Earth is very scarce, and so we need to use it sparingly. On top of that, when it comes to drinking water, every living thing needs it.

As human beings, we require fresh water to survive, and so do all the other living things that are on our planet, including animals and plants.

Did you know? All living beings present on Planet Earth are made up of water. A chicken contains 75% water, whereas an earthworm has 80% water, and a tomato is 95% water. And we, human beings, are made up of 60% water.

In simple words, it means that we require water to live. Our body composition is mostly water.

And when it comes to drinking water, both animals and plants need that too. Let’s try and see how.


Plants require water just like any other living being that grows and stays alive. They utilize water directly while capturing the light energy from the sun and transforming it into energy.

It is important to acknowledge the fact that plants are the foundation of every food chain. Hence, animals and humans completely depend on it for their survival. This includes drinking water too.

In fact, the water cycle is extremely dependent on plants that filter the water and release it back into the atmosphere. This is how plants affect our drinking water.


Animals require fresh water to keep their bodies active and functioning. They get water from the food they eat and also from drinking water.

Water is a vital component for completing all their bodily functions like regulating temperature, processing nutrient intake, getting rid of toxic waste, and maintaining body weight, and keeping them healthy.

Losing 10% of the water from their body can lead to their death!

Animals do not have the same luxury of sourcing water, unlike us humans do. For example, a dog cannot turn on a tap or purchase a bottle of water.

Certain animals have to actively hunt to get water for their basic survival.

Due to the pressure of finding clean water, certain species have evolved in conserving water more efficiently.

They even change the amount of water they consume. In scorching environmental conditions, the water demand is higher. The desert hopping mouse conserves every inch of water it could, in its digestive system!

Similarly, camels can survive without water for approximately 40 days, provided they consume green vegetables to get the proper moisture they require. In comparison, amphibians like frogs and toads can survive without water for a few days without a constant water source.

Frogs are vulnerable when we talk about water due to their semi-permeable skin. In other words, they lose water very quickly through their skin.

Human beings need to take into consideration the needs of other living species while drinking water.

In case we utilize all the available water for feeding our cattle, watering our crops, or filling our tanks, will it ever be enough for the other living beings on our Planet Earth?

We have already seen how our over-dependence on extracted water has adversely impacted rivers and groundwater. Now, we learned that it also has a noticeable impact on the plants and animals living in our ecosystems.

Taking Care of Nature

On top of ensuring there is enough drinking water for all the living species on our planet, we also need to check on the pollution that has taken its toll on animals and plants.

When the water gets contaminated because of the chemicals from humans, then the animals and plants might not survive. It may not be due to a lack of drinking water, but evidently due to the poisonous chemicals.

Hence, it is extremely critical to provide freshwater sources to animals and plants to ensure that they live in their environment.

Otherwise, we may see that certain species may become extinct eventually!
