FAQ's on Amendment in the Process to Obtain IEC Registration and Modification By CS Annu Sharma


It is a quite prominent fact that an Import Export Code is not only an essential requirement for stepping into the international market and import and export trade, it is also the key to have a competitive edge over the fellow market players.

Doing business internationally evidently gives a distinguished status in the local market. It allows the small traders and MSMEs to have a direct access to the global opportunities.

No wonder if you have a unique Import Export Code, it will help you fetch supplementary business opportunities in the name of your endeavor at the worldwide interface.

Unfortunately, the trade & commerce authorities have noticed since past few months that the nationwide export-import entities have been encountering numerous difficulties in the entire process of IEC registration and IEC modification due to, inter alia, technical glitches such as internet browser errors and disrupted browser settings of DSCs (digital signs).

In order to cope with the abovementioned hitches, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has introduced certain amendments to the process of IEC registration, application and IEC modification.

#1. What are the amendments to the process of IEC registration?

Broadly, the authorities have decided to automate the IEC registration process in a bid to enhance the ease of doing business.

The IEC is now system generated. DGFT has enforced the system of automatic PAN Verification for IEC application.

#2. How the PAN Verification is improved?

The department has taken concrete steps to optimize the PAN Verification process for IEC registration. Henceforth the PAN Verification service is integrated with the website of DGFT and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). As a result, there is no need for the PAN card copy for IEC application. There are only 2 documents required for import export code online registration:

  • Address proof and
  • Canceled cheque or a bank certificate
#3. Digital signature be required for IEC application?

As per the notification by DGFT, there is no requirement of a DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) while filling import export code form for fresh Import Export Code or Modification.

#4. IEC Instant Generation procedure?

Upon submission of the import-export code form along with the required documents, the import-export code will be auto-generated. The intimation regarding the IEC Allotment will be sent via SMS & e-mail to the applicant with a link to download & print the IEC code.

#5. What if any wrong information is furnished while IEC registration?

The Regulatory Authorities (RAs) now conduct post-verification of the new import export code. In case any wrong information is found in the IEC, the applicant will be liable for legal prosecution. Moreover, his import-export code will be suspended or canceled without prejudice to any other action that may be taken.

#6. How will the exporters & manufacturers claim benefits from the authorities?

DGFT has notified that the in case any entity wishes to claim benefits of government as an exporter or manufacturer, he would have to prove his credence or identity for the same, to the concerned authority.

#7. How will the IEC holder update his profile?

Immediately after the allotment of IEC, the applicant is supposed to update his profile. The ANF-1 of the Handbook of Procedure (2015-20) contains the importer/exporter profile. The importer/exporter has to update his profile as and when a change occurs or otherwise once a year.

#8. What is the technical requirement for filing an Import And Export Code (IEC)?

(i) A valid PAN
(ii) Valid Mobile Number and Email
(iii) Scanned copy of the documents to be

#9. How to apply for new IEC application?

 On the DGFT website under Quick links, select Apply for New IEC/Modify existing IEC. Enter PAN and press Search Button. The system will prompt for the following:

(a) Name of Company

(b) Date of Birth/Incorporation (DOB/DOI)

After entering above given details at (a) and (b) the system will verify your Name, DOB/DOI from the CBDT PAN Web Server and then it will direct to DGFT- IEC application enabling you to file for fresh IEC application.

(Please Note; Enter the Name and /DOB (DOI) correctly otherwise your authentication on the PAN server site will fail)

#10. How can I modify e-IEC?

In case you have generated the IEC letter from the e-IEC system and now you want to modify your IEC. Enter PAN and press Search Button. Then the system will prompt for the following:

(a) Name of Company

(b) Date of Birth/Incorporation (DOB/DOI)

(c) File Number

(d) File Date

The Name and DOB/DOI will be verified from CBDT PAN Web Server and File No and File Date will be validated from the DGFT-IEC application then only the system will dispatch tokens (one-time password) on your registered mobile and e-mail id. Enter any one of the tokens either of e-mail/mobile and then presses Submit Button to proceed.

(Please Note you have to enter the current File No along with File Date)

 #11. I have an IEC (numeric) how can I modify my IEC now?

Enter your PAN and press search button. Then DGFT-IEC system will display:

(a) Name of Company
(b) Date of Birth/Incorporation (DOB/DOI)

Enter the above details given at (a) and (b) which will be verified by  CBDT PAN Web Server and then it will direct you to DGFT- Online IEC application enabling you to Migrate your existing IEC to e-IEC.

#12. My earlier application was rejected how will I proceed?

Enter your PAN and press Search Button. Then the system will prompt for the following:

(a) Name of Company

(b) Date of Birth/Incorporation (DOB/DOI)

(c) File Number

(d) File Date

The Name and DOB/DOI will be verified from CBDT PAN Web Server and File No and File Date will be verified from the DGFT-IEC application then only the system will dispatch tokens (one-time password) on your registered mobile and e-mail id. Enter any one of the tokens either of e-mail/mobile and then presses Submit Button.

DGFT- Online IEC application system here will automatically display the two options of View/Print rejection letter along with “Apply again where the earlier application was rejected”.

#13. How many documents do I have to attach in IEC Application?

In case of fresh IEC application, you have to attach the following two documents

(1) Address Proof

(2) Banker Certificate/Cancelled

In case of modification of IEC, the attachment of document will continue as per existing provisions.

(Please Note: Attachment of PAN and photograph is not required in case of fresh /modification of IEC application)

#14. How will print my IEC Certificate?

The system will automatically generate the IEC certificate once you submit your application based on your Jurisdictional Authority and it will automatically dispatch the IEC letter on your registered e-mail id.

However, at the time of next modification, the e-IEC system will continue to display Print/View your IEC details along with Modify e-IEC.

#15. I am unable to submit my application. What may be the issue?

You must ensure the Application should be complete with all the details. Application fee of Rs 500/- in case of fresh IEC and IEC modification Rs 200/- is mandatory.
